Intervention Discussions

What to say

Intervention discussions may be difficult to initiate, but if someone you care about is using synthetic drugs, it’s vital to step in. Make sure you avoid these types of conversations while an individual is under the influence and ensure you are calm and prepared.  During an intervention, try using the following steps:

  1. Explain that you care about them
  2. Be specific and direct about your concerns
  3. Don’t judge, really listen to their words
  4. Separate the behavior you dislike from their character, addiction is a medical disease, not a character flaw
  5. Say what you want them to do: Is it drug testing? Seeking professional help? Be specific
  6. Offer to help and support them in any way you can
  7. Keep the door open for future conversations
