What Synthetic Drugs Do

Synthetic drugs may have the similar stimulant, depressant or hallucinogenic properties as other drugs, but the health risks are often far more extreme.

While there is still much to be learned about synthetic drugs, research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse has found many of these drugs affect mood and perception to a far greater extent than typical stimulants. This results in a greater chance of abuse as users seek the same sense of euphoria and distorted perceptions they initially received from the substances, through increased dosages or moving up to more potent versions of the drug.
