Know the signs of an overdose

Spotting an opioid overdose isn’t always easy. But if you recognize these signs, you know it’s time to act fast!

  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Falling asleep or losing consciousness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Cold and/or clammy skin
  • blue lips and nails

A quick guide to NARCAN®

Naloxone, better known as NARCAN®, can reverse an opioid overdose and save lives. It usually comes as an easy-to-use nasal spray. Here’s how you use it:

  • Call 911 first!
  • Remove the applicator from the box
  • Hold it between two fingers with your thumb on the plunger
  • Insert the nozzle deep into the nostril
  • Press the plunger firmly to release the nasal spray
  • Wait 2–3 minutes
  • If no response, give a second dose in the other nostril
  • Stay with the person until emergency help arrives

Naloxone, aka NARCAN®, is the only drug that can reverse an opioid or fentanyl overdose.
It’s legal to carry and widely available at low to no cost.

Here are three ways to get your hands on naloxone today:

  • Over the Counter
    You can buy NARCAN® and generic naloxone at many big-box stores and even order it online.
  • Prescription
    Any licensed healthcare provider or registered pharmacist can write you a prescription for naloxone.
  • For FREE
    You can get naloxone for free at your local Community Syringe Service Programs (SSPs),
    Naloxone Access Points (NAPs), or certain non-profit organizations.
